New Irish Comedy-Drama: Handsome Devil

“If you spend your whole life being someone else, who is going to be you?”

Handsome Devil is set to become one of the best Irish movies of 2017. From the writer/director of ‘The Stag’ this will be John Butler’s second film. This coming-of-age drama has already been compared to brilliant Irish comedies of 2016 such as The Young Offenders and A Date For Mad Mary.

John Butler told TheJournal.ie last month:

It’s a story about the acceptance of the other and of ambiguity and of difference, which should be an uncontroversial idea, but has now sort of become contested.
It follows the story of two teenage boys who share a dorm room in boarding school. The two lads are opposites, one a macho natural athlete in a sports mad school. The other, a music loving outcast. They form an unlikely friendship which doesn’t go down will with their peers.
Fionn O’Shea and Nicholas Galitzine play the lead role. The rest of the cast include the best of Irish talent Moe Dunford, Amy Huberman, Ardal O’Hanlon and Andrew Scott.
The rugby scenes through out the movie were even choreographed by Brian O’Driscoll. You can’t get more Irish than that!!
The comedy-drama first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, receiving great reveiws including one from the Hollywood reporter:
Winning performances from O’Shea and Galitzine as odd-couple pals, plus nuanced work from a terrific Andrew Scott… make this a feel-good ‘It Gets Better’ tale that should speak to young audiences — LGBT teens in particular.

Handsome Devil will be screened as part of the Closing Gala at the Dublin International Film Festival 2017 – You can buy tickets here,

It will going on general release across Ireland on April 21st.
