Monty Python’s Eric Idle is to feature alongside Professor Brian Cox in a BBC2 Christmas comedy special.
Idle and the team responsible for musical Spamalot are responsible for The Entire Universe, an hour-long show about the birth of the universe with a larger-than-life cast of characters.
In a throwback to Idle’s 1970s comedy series Rutland Weekend Television, Cox will give an scientific Christmas lecture to a fictional broadcaster, before realising he is in fact part of a major musical put on by the Muriel Tritt School of Music and Dance.
The all-star show will also include Warwick Davis, Noel Fielding and Hannah Waddingham – with Robin Ince attempting to keep order.
Belfast born Head of BBC Comedy commissioning Shane Allen ordered The Entire Universe from BBC Studios Comedy Production. It will be filmed in front of a live studio audience at the BBC’s studios in Elstree. Short-lived Top Gear executive producer and producer of Channel 4’s recent Eurotrash reboot Lisa Clark is the producer.
Idle said: “It’s fitting that 41 years after Rutland Weekend Television produced a Christmas special with George Harrison, it is back with the Beatle of Science, Brian Cox.”
