Netflix: Dear White People Backlash

“WARNING! This series is meant for both white and black audiences – and every other colour imaginable.”

This is a TV adaption of the 2014 acclaimed indie film. This series satirizes “post-racial” America as students of colour navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college. It will be 10 episodes long.

This tv series is due to come out on Netflix on April 28, 2017 but since the trailer release there has been a lot of controversy on the internet. Even with the disclaimer at the very beginning there has been a huge backlash even based on the name alone. People have started cancelling their subscription and started  a boycott with #BoycottNetflix trending on twitter.

Director Justin Simien has responded to the backlash on Facebook: “When the first trailer for the film dropped, I’ll admit the deluge of claims that I was a reverse racist and a ‘piece of [expletive] monkey that should shut up and go back to Africa’ really hurt,” Simien wrote.

“But now, I feel strangely encouraged. To see the sheer threat that people feel over a date announcement video featuring a woman of colour (politely) asking not to be mocked makes it so clear why I made this show.”
