In 2000 RTE broadcast a memorable TV comedy PATHS TO FREEDOM. The series ran for 6 only episodes and we in grintage would love to see ‘where are they know’ follow up!
PTF at the time was a ground breaking comedy ‘mockumentary’ and based on the stories of two male prisoners from ‘different sides of the tracks’ released from the same prison on the same day. As a ‘social experiment’ a camera crew followed the pair for a year to see who they survived back in the real world. Starring the brilliant Michael McElhatton as Rats and later Downtown Abbey star Brendan Coyle as Jeremy the cast was boosted by special comedic acting talent such as Deirdre O’Kane (Jeremy’s wife Helen) and Peter McDonald as Rats’s best friend Tomo.
See the clip above to see the pair visiting Belfast to get a taste of the great comedy on offer. The series was co-written by director Ian Fitzgibbon and McElhatton himself.
Ep1 below explains all. Reminds us all what a fresh comedy series PTF was and we ask is it worth re-visiting to see what happened the main characters nearly 20 years on?
