YouTube is set to launch a live television service aimed at cord cutters that offers around 40 US cable and broadcast networks.

YouTubeTV, which will cost US$35 for six accounts, will offer subscribers access to all original programming from the Google-owned service’s pay offering YouTube Red.

It will also make ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC available, as well as cable channels including ESPN, USA, Bravo and FX, while Showtime will be available for an additional fee.

Delivered over the internet, the service is designed to attract younger viewers put off by costly pay TV packages.

It will launch in selected US markets later this year but there are “no plans” for an international roll-out at present, according to YouTube’s chief product officer Neal Mohan.

“Millennials love great TV content but what we’ve seen is they don’t want to watch it in the traditional setting,” said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki.

YouTubeTV will compete with AT&T’s DirecTV Now and Dish Network’s Sling TV, while Hulu and Apple are also preparing to enter the market in the coming months.

The move follows the launch of YouTube Red, a subscription service offering extra original content from the online platform’s host of vloggers including Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg, Lilly Singh, The Fine Brothers and Joey Graceffa. YouTube has since cut its ties with PewDiePie over anti-Semitic content in his videos.

Launched in the US in 2016 and costing US$9.99 a month, the service has since rolled out into Australia, Canada and South Korea, with a UK launch to follow.
