One area of screen comedy that is often overlooked are the animated movies that draw families to cinemas week in week out. Per capita, Irish families are one of the biggest cinemas ticket buyers in the world.
They are the audience that also spend most moolah at the popcorn and drinks counter – never mind hoover up the merch. So when Hollywood is set to release a potential block buster the whole industry is set to earn a buck so the PR machine kicks in.
When that block buster is the new Lego Batman Movie then the hype machine is rolled out big time.
A million miles away from the tortured Bruce Wayne (played by Ben Affleck), the new Batman is voiced by the gruff tones of Will Arnett (BoJack Horseman).
The promo clip shows how the producers built on the smart animation style developed for hugely successful The Lego Movie and stays faithful to the original toy design with the use of stop motion technology.
As for the plot, the movie will focus on the origins of Batman and Robin’s tight relationship. Voiced by Michael Cera, the character of Robin is reimagined somewhat to become a little bit more pathetic and hilariously stupid.
It’s fun, vibrant … and the voices – provided by an incredible cast that also includes Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis and Rosario Dawson – are top notch.
Written by Seth Grahame-Smith and directed by Chris McKay, the film will be released in Irish cinemas from February 2017. Block booking advisable!
