The Edinburgh Comedy Award is considered the Oscars of comedy.
The nominations include a shortlist of nine comedians out of over 700 shows. This is the longest line up ever and it includes more female comics in the history of the prize.
These women include Elf Lyons who dresses as a parrot and has a show called Swan. Known for her distinctive style on stage – described as ‘a more focussed Eddie Izzard’ by Chortle and ‘Hilariously brave’ by British VOGUE – Elf loves creating work that is relevant, political and joyful. She mixes her vulnerabilities, her obscure geeky knowledge and her sass to create fun, action packed quests for her and the audience, often resulting in a huge fun mess on stage.
Hannah Gadsby has promised never to do stand-up again. She was won the prestigious Barry award at the Melbourne comedy festival. Her show is about about gender violence and the limits of comedy. Her show is called Nanette.
