NEWS – Frank Zappa Movie Highest Kickstarter

The late musician, composer, guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director FRANK ZAPPA was one of the funniest & creative free thinking individuals of modern performance. He was so anarchic he could have been Irish – and thus an honorary grintager!

And he is soon going to adorn the big screen! A new movie about the legendary maverick musician became the highest-funded documentary film in Kickstarter’s history with  a final tally of $1,126,036 from 8,688 backers. Outside of Kickstarter, director Alex Winter collected another $91K to push the final tally to $1.2m. The funds were used to produce a new documentary film about the life of the composer plus preserve the Zappa music and film archives as well.

So who the **** is Frank Zappa?  The huge support for funding the movie shows he had amazing hardcore fans – even more so as he passed away more than 12 years ago.

His band The Mothers of Invention were anti-pop and revolted against the soooo righteous and serious music industry at the time. TMOT were everything pop music wasn’t meant to be! Freak Out indeed. One grintager in our HQ can ‘sing’ the classic It Can’t Happen Here off by heart. And yes it is meant to be the most out of tune song ever written. That was the point!

And just in case you think we are hinting that Frank Zappa was some secret or oddball musician this summer Sony Pictures Classics have bought the rights and will distribute Winter’s feature length movie about the ‘bearded and gross’ Mr. Zappa. His moustache and wee chin beard is still copied by hipsters the world over. Genius and Mad! What a legacy. Go see and admire the man. Irish release date TBC.

Read a more detailed biography below this trailer.

Frank Zappa was an American musician, composer, guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director who left an estate of $40 million when he died in 1993 aged 52. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was an unprecedented rock musician, world-widely known for his terrific musical knowledge and outrageous sense of humor. In his more than a three-decade-long career, Zappa composed atypical works ranging from rock and jazz to orchestral and musique concrète musical jazz to orchestral and musique concrète musical pieces. He was only a teenage boy when he acquired a taste and appreciation for 20th-century classical composers like Edgard Varèse, Igor Stravinsky and Anton Webern, along with 1950s rhythm and blues music. He started writing classical music while in high school and at the same time he was playing drums in rhythm and blues bands.

Later on, Zappa switched to playing the electric guitar.

All in all, he has produced more than 60 albums, some together with the band The Mothers of Invention and others as a solo artist. His 1966 debut album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, was created using an eclectic and experimental musical approach along with foul and funny lyrics, just like the most of the subsequent compositions with the band. As for Zappa’s solo albums like Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Apostrophe and Shut Up ‘N Play Yer Guitar, they only helped him turn from an underground rock star to a highly regarded composer. A self-taught composer as he was and influenced by various types of music, Frank created tunes that critics often found difficult to categorize.

In addition to his vast musical opus, he was a loud critic of mainstream education and organized religion, as well as a passionate advocate for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation and abolition of censorship.

He got married twice in his life and with his second wife he had four children, Moon, Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva. Frank Zappa was posthumously honored as he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and granted the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
