John Mahoney aka Martin Crane in Frasier Has Passed Away

John Mahoney has passed away at the age of 77. 

He passed away last Sunday in Chicago after a brief stint in the hospital.

The British actor is probably best known for his role as Martin Crane in the TV comedy series Frasier. He played the father of Kelsey Grammer on the show which ran from 1993 to 2004.

Mahoney’s grandfather was from Cork and was born in Blackpool and then moved to America when he was a teenager to join his sister. His started off as an English teacher and then became an editor of a medical magazine. His acting career started late only pursuing it in his late thirties.


In 1986 John Mahoney won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Artie Shaughnessy in The House of Blue Leaves.

Galway was one of Mahoneys favourite places along side Chicago.  He became a regular at the Galway International Arts Festival since 2002. Speaking about his love for the Galway Festival he said:

“I just keep coming to Galway. It all started in 2002 when I was doing Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night with the Irish Rep Company in Chicago. We were invited to bring it to the Galway Arts Festival, and performing it there was one of the highlights of my career, genuinely.

“I met Paul (Fahy, now the artistic director of the festival) the first time I came over and we struck up a friendship that goes beyond the theatre. I’m not just saying this to blow smoke up you, but my two favourite places in the world are Galway and Chicago.”

Some of his film credits included Tin MenSuspectMoonstruckEight Men OutSay AnythingBarton Fink and The Hudsucker Proxy.

Most recently, John had a recurring role in TV Land’s ‘Hot In Cleveland’, where he appeared as Roy in six episodes between 2011 and 2014.
