An Installation Will Play “Africa” By Toto In A Desert In Africa Forever

A sound installation has been set up to play Africa by Toto forever.

Max Siedentopf is a Namibian-German artist who has set up an installation in the Namib Desert. It has six speakers and is set to play ‘Africa’ by Toto on an infinite loop. The speakers are solar powered and will play just that track. On his website, Siedentopf states the  “installation runs on solar batteries to keep Toto going for all eternity.”

“[I] wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit ‘Africa’ in Africa,” the 27-year-old artist told the BBC.

“Some [Namibians] love it and some say it’s probably the worst sound installation ever. I think that’s a great compliment.”

Siedentopf said he considers the tribute worthwhile because Toto has “made a song that is understood and liked all over the world”, he wrote to the Guardian.

“If no one hates it, no one will love it,” Siedentopf wrote. “I think having the worst sound installation is more interesting than just a mediocre installation.”

“I’m not too worried that someone will put it in jeopardy,” Siedentopf wrote. “Finding it might take some time.”
