New Head Of Comedy and Drama For RTE Confirmed

Shane Murphy has been appointed to a newly created role in RTE.

The Dubliner has been given the role: Head of Drama and Comedy of Irish broadcaster RTE.

Shane Murphy has a 25 year career in production and will be leaving his job as managing director of London-based Acorn Media Enterprises for the new role. He has worked with Acorn since 2015 where he has lead the commissioning, development and co-production of several major dramas in partnership including ‘Agatha Raisin, with Ashley Jensen, Katy Wix and  Matthew Horne, and the forthcoming Benny Hill biopic.

In this newly created role, Murphy will be in charge of developing and delivering drama and scripted comedy for RTE. This is a large focus on the development of new talent and growing youth audiences.

RTÉ director of content, Jim Jennings said: ‘Shane brings a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of production along with extensive international experience which will enable RTÉ to build on its success in drama and comedy and to develop and nurture Irish creative talent”.

Murphy added: ‘While I’m genuinely sad to be leaving the uniquely creative and dynamic Acorn Media, I could not turn down the opportunity to work across scripted shows in my native public service broadcaster. I’m very much looking forward to taking on this exciting new role.’

Jane Gogan has overseen drama in RTÉ in recent years. Eddie Doyle left his role as Head of Comedy in RTE earlier this year to become head of content production at BBC Northern Ireland.

Murphy will return to Dublin in August to take up his role.
