Nickelodeon’s experimentally-animated The Ren & Stimpy Show may be coming back.
If you are a child of the 90’s you more than likely remember this show. If you were a fan of the cartoon then we have good news for you. There is a new documentary on the way exploring the strange relationship between the chihuahua Ren and slow kitty Stimpy. It was both violent and manipulative as well as loving.
As part of the show there was sketches such as pet logs, Powdered Toast Man and “Don’t Whiz on the Electric Fence.” the board game.
The show ran for 5 seasons, from 1991-95 and now it’s back with new documentary Happy Happy, Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story.
Filmmakers Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood promise lots of never-before-seen footage and stories, explaining:
“Because of John’s exodus, many of those on the show refused to speak publicly about R&S for the last 25 years. But now, due to persistence and the passage of time, dozens of the Ren & Stimpy artists, writers, directors, producers and executives have shared their experiences and insights with us for the first time.”
The show’s iconic creator, Kricfalusi is aware of the project and has given it his partial blessing:
“We have asked John K multiple times for an interview. He has okay’d the participation of several people close to him, however, as of now, John himself has refused to participate…but who knows what the future holds.”
They are raising funds for the post-production edit via Kickstarter. If you donate to the fund you could get your hands on some perks up for grabs, like original art from The Ren & Stimpy Show, a limited edition print by Bill Wray, private drawing lessons with the show’s animators.
Happy happy, joy joy, indeed!
