A Black Comedy of Mayo For Sam

We have all heard of Mayo’s curse and the Sam Maguire Cup.

1951 was the last time Mayo won the All-Ireland football final. While celebrating on their way home they passed through Foxford interrupting a funeral on their journey.

The priest was so offended by their behaviour that he put a curse on Mayo football to never win a subsequent All-Ireland final until all members of the 1951 team were dead.

Since them Mayo has come so close, getting to the final 8 times but lost each time.

This story inspired Antoin Beag Ó Colla to write a short film called An Mhallacht/The Curse. It was shown at the Galway Film Fleadh last week as Gaeilge with English subtitles. The black comedy stars Seamus Hughes, Marcus Lamb, Peadar Cox, Peadar Ó Treasaigh, Yvonne Ní Laife, and Aindrias De Staic.

It was directed by Cóilín Ó Scólaí and produced by James Ryan of StationHouse Media.

The film was screened in the Radisson Blu Hotel as part of the Fleadh’s Way Out West strand Wednesday July 12. #FilmFleadh
