First Acts Announced For Galway Vodafone Comedy Carnival

The first wave of acts for the Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway 2017 has just been announced.

Tuesday 24th – Monday 30th October 2017

Over the past year Galway has won the plaudit for being the world’s friendliest city, the award for creating Ireland’s best beer and is now designated European Capital Of Culture for 2020. This October Bank Holiday the City Of The Tribes also plans to host the country’s best comedy festival.

Acts revealed in this first wave include Patton Oswalt, Jon Richardson, Katy Brand, Al Porter, Dermot & Dave and Reginald D Hunter.

Festival director Kevin Healy said “We are revealing this first wave of acts earlier than usual because we are so excited about these exclusive shows that we couldn’t keep them secret. We just know that comedy fans will want to get in early and get their plans in place to be front and centre at comedy central this October.  The full festival programme will be revealed in late August and we guarantee that we have a amazing festival planned for you.”

Underlining this ambition, the organisers have managed to book the 2017 Grammy Award Winner Patton Oswalt (best comedy album). This exclusive Irish date is a massive coup for the festival. The voice of Remy in Ratatouille and star of movies like Zoolander, The Secret life Of Walter Mitty and Starsky and Hutch, he is probably best known for playing ‘Spence’ on The King of Queens for nine seasons.

From just across the water comes Old Man, Jon Richardson. Best known as team captain on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Jon is also a star of Live At The Apollo and Have I Got News For You. The British Comedy Award nominee is on his way to Galway to complain about the state of the world and offer no solutions whatsoever.

Another festival exclusive, Katy Brand won a British Comedy award for her TV sketch series Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show in 2008. Katy’s hit Edinburgh Festival show I Was a Teenage Christian is the story of how one Sunday, aged 13, she went to a local church service and became a fundamentalist Christian. She was an obnoxious, self-important dick but at least she was going to heaven. Now she’s coming to Galway.

Today FM’s Mr Entertainment, Al Porter spent years becoming a massive overnight success and boy is he enjoying it. The Edinburgh Award Nominee will perform for two nights in the round in the iconic, Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent in the heart of Galway City. It’ll be an all-singing, all laughing explosion of filth and frivolity.

Also from the Today FM stable, Dermot and Dave return with their ridiculously funny show, as part of the seemingly never-ending  Ah Sure Lookit’ tour. Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore sold out last year’s show in the Spiegeltent in record time. This year, they’ve moved to the bigger Black Box Theatre and plan to beat that record.

Stand up comedy’s coolest customer has a new touring show, the rather gently monikered Some People v. Reginald D Hunter. He may have toned down his show titles but this is a comedian at the very top of his game and no topic is safe from his unblinking analysis and playful erudition. Reg loves Ireland and Galway seems to bring out the very best in him. This Town Hall show will be terrific.
