Comedian Patrick Kielty ‘has GAA to thank’ For Being A Comedian

Patrick Kielty has put his comedy career down to the GAA.

He admitted to his GAA coach “blackmailing” him into performing at his school play.

“I wasn’t much of an outfield player.

“I got an injury when I was 12 and I got shin splints and I was told I couldn’t run – so I went into goals.

“I was lucky enough to be coached by Pat O’Hare in St Patrick’s Grammar school.

“It was Pat who put me on stage first – I basically have the GAA to thank for ending up in entertainment, in a weird way.”

The Co Down comedian Paul Collins on Today FM on Sunday: “I never really wanted to be on stage but I was a seasoned mimic.

“I was doing voices at the back of the bus and Pat pulled me aside and said he was stuck for stuff for the Christmas concert.

“And he said, ‘Look, you either do the concert or I’ll drop you from the football team’ and I said, ‘Pat, that’s blackmail.’

“He said, ‘It is, but no one is going to believe you. I’m the teacher and you’re the pupil.’

“So I did the Christmas concert. I played in the next game and I let in five goals – and he dropped me.”
