Comedy & Music: ”Weird Al” Yankovic

Flight of the conchords, The Smothers Brothers, Tenacious D and The Lonely Island.

When it comes to comedy songs these are some of the big names spring to mind and there are so much more. Some are musical stand-up comics, two-man novelty bands or comedians and actors that decided to try their hand at writing funny songs, and it worked!

We want to delve into this whole other world of comedy and learn about some of these comedy musical groups or sometimes just the one of songs on their own.

The comedy singer/songwriter we had to start with was ”Weird Al” Yankovic.

He is a an American singer, songwriter, parodist, record producer, satirist, actor, voice actor, music video director, film producer, and author. Weird Al Yankovic has been huge in the comedy and music scene since the 1980s. Since then he has sold more than 12 million albums and recorded over 150 parody and original songs.

He has parodied some of the biggest names in music such as Michael Jackson, Nirvana and Lady Gaga. For years he has won Grammys and loads of other awards but it wasn’t until his album Mandatory Fun in 2014 that he reached number one in Billboard 200 list.

Here is one of the songs from that album, a parody of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines.  It’s received over 35 million views, probably from teachers and Grammar Nazis.
