Remembering Don Rickles makes us laugh not cry.
The king of insult comedy has sadly passed away at the age of 90 from Kidney failure.
Growing up he was the class clown in school and at the age of 18 he enlisted in the Navy to become an entertainer in the special services. After leaving the navy he studied acting alongside Grace Kelly, Jason Robards, and Anne Bancroft. He was short, chubby and bald and didn’t see himself on the big screen so he saw himself in clubs where he performed stand up comedy. Having to deal with a lot of hecklers he developed a method to cope by insulting the audience back. Thus he became known for his insult comedy.
It was an honour to be insulted by the comedian and even Frank Sinatra or Ronald Reagan weren’t safe from his humour. He was a frequent guest on various talk shows including The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, and Craig Ferguson.
See some of his highlights in the clip above.
You may also recognise Rickles from some of his bigger movie roles in films such as Casino and TV shows like The Unit and Hot In Cleveland. He is probably best known to our younger audience for his role as Mr Potato Head. Here is the story of Mr Potato Head below.
