Ireland has a vibrant animation industry and thankfully comedy plays a big part. Here are 5 Irish animation shorts we found on You Tube that made us laugh!
Bear in mind there is a lot more but they aren’t available to watch online. First up – in no order – is the mystery man!
Follow the non-adventures of returned emigrant Martin as he struggles to adjust to life back in Ireland. The series has received millions of hits online and focuses on the comical misunderstandings between Martin who has moved back in with his Cork parents .We featured his most popular video ‘Referendum’ – his wickedly funny take on the marriage equality referendum – in our No.1 watch series. The creator of Martin’s Life continues to protect his anonymity and that wish has been protected by family, friends and media.
Here’s a gem from one of the two animators from Cork in the Top 5.
Give Up Yer Aul Sins
Give Up Yer Aul Sins is an Academy Award nominated short film, which humorously reenacts original recordings of Dublin schoolrooms in the 1960s made by Peig Cunningham and subsequently rediscovered and released by EMI. In the film, a documentary crew arrives to film the activities of the classroom. The teacher chooses Mary to retell, in her own imaginative way, the bible story of John the Baptist.
Give Up Yer Aul Sins kickstarted the career of now European powerhouse Brown Bag Films who now produce some of the successful animated series across the world. The Dublin based company also received six Emmy® awards for Peter Rabbit (2014), and a host of BAFTA, Emmy® and Annie nominations for their hit shows Octonauts, Doc McStuffins, Bing and Henry Hugglemonster. Along with “Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty” (see clip no.3), Give Up Yer Aul Sins also received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short at the 2001 Academy Awards. A 6 part series was commissioned by RTE Entertainment in the same year.
Here’s the short that started it all … & if you are non Irish be warned – Mary talks in a real Dublin city accent.
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty
Here is the Oscar nominated “Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty”, directed by Nicky Phelan and written/voiced by Kathleen O’Rourke. In this computer animation, Granny O’Grimm, a seemingly sweet old lady, loses the plot as she tells her version of Sleeping Beauty to her terrified grandchild.
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film – again for Brown Bag Films – at the 2010 Academy Awards.
These lads haven’t posted anything in a few years but their content is still gold. Eyebrowy have produced shorts about Irish comedians, international singers and even Dave Fanning! Here watch an animated James Blunt Coldplay, Liam & Noel Gallagher (Oasis), U2’s Bono and Thom Yorke from Radiohead trying to answer one of the great mysteries of super star shopping….
We could not have a top Irish comedy animation list without including Sminky Shorts. Featured previously in our No.1 watch series, Sminky animation has a huge following with over 35 million views. IN 2012 creator Jason Sullivan signed to United Agents, the London-based office that represents amongst other stars like Rickey Gervais. His short stories are usually based around a farm and the characters usually animals. Like Martin’s Life, both animators voice all the shorts in their own Cork accents.
