Looking for a new, light hearted show to comedy binge? Parks and Recreation aka Parks and Rec maybe the one for you.
This mokumentary, The Office style show is based on the Parks Department in the small town of Pawnee, Indiana.
Comic genius Amy Poehler produces it and plays the lead character Leslie Knope. She is the Deputy Director of the Parks Department and takes her job way too seriously dragging her team with her.
The show features a brilliant cast with such a broad character range that will make you wish were worked for the Pawnee Parks Department. The show started in 2009 and produced 7 brilliant seasons before it ended last year.
Here are 8 reasons you should start watching this show right now!
1 – It’s a feel good comedy!
The evenings are getting darker and it’s becoming harder to stay in the chirpy mood when you’re walking in the door soaked through from the rain and starved. This show will turn that mood around in a second. Leslie Knope radiates infectious positivity and Rob Lowes character Chris Traeger is positive to fault, so much so that it drives him crazy. They aren’t all like that but their bright attitudes balance out the more sober characters like Ron Swanson
2 – Ron Swanson’s words of advice
Following on from our previous point.. Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman). This man is the manliest of men. He has a brilliant mustache is the master of woodwork and believes every meal should be breakfast food.
3- Celebrity Appearances
This show has a brilliant amount of guest stars including Bill Murray, Paul Rudd, Megan Muallaly (Ron Swansons wife on the show and real life) and even Michelle Obama.
Amy Poehler was part of Saturday Night Live cast for 7 years so the show features cameos from SNL members, old and new. These include Fred Armisan, Will Forte
4 – Leslie’s relationships
Leslie has a very big heart and doesn’t hold back on her love for other people. Here is just a fraction of the compliments she has given to her best friend Ann.
“Ann, you beautiful tropical fish. You’re smart as a whip and you’re cool under pressure.”
“I’ve said this to you before and I know it makes you uncomfortable, but you’re thoughtful, and you’re brilliant, and your ambiguous ethnic blend perfectly represents the dream of the American melting pot.”
“Ann, you are such a good friend, you’re a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk-ox. Thank you, ox.”
“Oh, Ann, you beautiful, rule-breaking moth.”
And of course her on and off, awkward relationship with Ben.
5 – Aubrey Plaza
Aubrey brings the definition of dead pan to her character April Ludgate, the office intern. Even though herself and Ron Swanson are the most unemotional characters in the show their relationship develops into one similar of a father and daughter. She is broody and sarcastic and when she cracks a rare smile it feels evil.
The part was written for her co-writer Michael Schur explains “Aubrey sat in my office and made me feel uncomfortable to a level a 32 year old guy should never feel… She was just staring at me… I may as well have been tap dancing like Daffy Duck trying to entertain her.”
6 – Treat yo’self
Tom and Donna are the King and Queen of Treat Yo’Self day. This happens on October 13th every year ( or any other day) where you have an excuse to spoil yourself. Mimosa? Treat Yo Self. Fine-Leathered Goods? Treat Yo Self. Cashmere? Treat Yo Self.
7 – Chris Pratt
Leaving the cinema last summer after watching Jurassic World ( Great movie) my friends were in awe of the male lead role and started googling instantly demanding to know everything about this heart throb. I did not see the sex appeal however because I just went through years watching Chris Pratt play the role of chubby, man-child Andy Dwyer. Even though Chris Pratt didn’t have the six pack that he does now, it just made us love him even more. He will remind you of your younger brother combined with an affectionate puppy.
8 – Lil Sebastian
Lil Sebastian is a small horse that is the Hero of Pawnee town. It may seem confusing as to why the whole town worships this mini horse but it has brought Ron Swanson to tears and April Ludgate smile. So he has won me over.
If this hasn’t convinced you yet then you just don’t want to be happy!
