FX has just released Atlanta a new comedy and so far it has received brilliant reviews.
It is a single-camera, semi-autobiographical 10 episode series. The show is about a man who tries to manages his cousins rap career navigating it to the top of the Altanta rap scene. The main focus of all this is to improve their families lives.
The original series is produced by actor, comedian, writer and wrapper Donald Glover who also plays one of the lead roles. “The thesis with the show was kind of to show people how it felt to be black, and you can’t really write that down. You kind of have to feel it. So the tonal aspect was really important to me,” Glover says.
This is one of the more serious comedies of the year with a deep storyline. Although it does have its lighter moments its a darker comedy more along the lines of Girls and Louie.
Glover again – “What was important to me was that this show was personal and had a specific take, because that’s all you can really ask for from a show nowadays. Having a specific point of view on something. Everything else you kind of do easily and cheaply, I think. We definitely talked about how people are going to feel about it just to make sure it didn’t get in the way of us telling a story that people enjoy, but that was about it.”
Glover is a very successful stand up comedian and at one point there was even a petition for him to become the first black Spiderman.
Glover became a writer for 30 Rock at the age of 21. His comedy career really kicked off when he played optimistic Troy Barnes in the American sitcom Community. Alongside this Glover became a successful musician, stage name Childish Gambino. He released his first album in 2011. Even with his successful rap career he choose not to cast himself as a rapper in Atlanta. “That would be weird,” he says. “Like, that would be so weird.”.
Donald Glover is set to appear on The Late Late Show with James Corden this week.
