TV NEWS – Amazon September Comedy Month

Last month Amazon were asking you to vote for your favourite comedy pilot. Read more here.

Now the global VoD giant has announced that next month is COMEDY MONTH!

Joe Lewis, head of Amazon’s half-hour programming says – “September will be Amazon’s month of comedy, where we will debut four new comedy series in a row, the first streaming service to do so. We’re calling it Amazon’s month of comedy, unless we come up with something better before September,”

Amazon are launching four new comedy series including the return of acclaimed Transparent.

Woody Allen’s highly anticipated “Crisis in Six Scenes’ is included in this line-up. It stars Miley Cyrus and Elaine May.

Crisis in Six Scenes is a comedy that takes place in the 1960’s during turbulent times in the United States and a middle class suburban family is visited by a guest who turns their household completely upside down.  It will make it’s debut September 30th. Here’s a sneak peak.

Fleabag will premier Sept. 16. Award-winning writer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, writes and stars as Fleabag, an unfiltered, dry-witted woman who hurls herself at modern living in London as she deals with the loss of her best friend, a breakup, and financial troubles at her café. Get an uncensored look at this fast-paced and funny confessional of a woman so totally detached, she’s utterly lost.

Comedian Tig Notaro writes and stars in semi-autobiographical dark comedy One Mississippi. It follows Tig as she returns to her childhood home to deal with the unexpected death of her beloved mother. Struggling with her own health and relationship challenges, she decides to reconnect with her roots to heal and move forward.

It’s one of these rare shows where the lead character is gay but that is not the main focus of the show. “It’s deep South. (But) there’s nothing about the show that’s a cliché, it’s all very true to life. There’s no broad stroke. It’s not ‘the South,’ it’s not ‘lesbianism.’ It’s not a stylized tone. It’s very real.” stated the exec producer Kate Robin.

“I think it could be expected, taking place in Mississippi, that the topic of being gay and coming out and conflict with family members would be an easy place to go, but that’s not the issue in my life, so that’s been an exciting element, to present my life as it is in that manner,” Notaro said. “No one flinches if I have a girlfriend or three. I didn’t think about it when I was thinking about the show or pitching it.”

Lewis stresses that the September line-up  is Amazon’s “riskiest, most artistic and funniest slate ever.
